Outreaches

Mombasa has approximately 60.000 orphans in the age of 0- 14 years old at the moment. In the whole of Kenya the total amount of orphans is 2,4 million. 41% of the Kenyan population is under 14 years. Mombasa has a lot of street children in the age between 7-18 years. A group of “older youths” in the age of 18-25 years also live on the streets. They have never been to school, have lost their family and have to survive on the streets every day. Their days are filled with fear and (confrontations with) drugs and violence. They have to face and deal with danger and hunger every day. To live on the streets is to live under very unsanitary circumstances which may cause outbreaks of diseases and infections. The local government and the population look down on these street children. The police regularly tear down their street camps and imprison the children. Unfortunately our homes are not (yet) equipped to take in all these children and help them. However, we want to be able to do more for these children. We want to do this through outreaches. During an outreach we do several things: evangelization, taking care of wounds, handing out food, sports and games and/ or HIV- AIDS information. When the circumstances allow it at the centre (for instance when the OBC boys are at school all day long) we can invite boys to the centre. They can then wash themselves here, get a new set of clothes, wash their clothes and join in on a day program. An outreach also offers us the possibility to get to know the street boys better, which makes a “selection” for when we can take in new boys in the future easier. Approximately 80 street children can join in on an outreach, depending on the program for the day. The budget per outreach has been set on 100,- euro The budget needed per year based on 1 outreach each month is: 1200,- euro. When the outreaches prove to be a success and the demand gets greater, S2S will increase the frequency after careful deliberation with the project leaders. This will also have an influence on the budget. |
