FAQ

Is it safe to go to Kenya?

Yes. Kenya is a safe country to travel to. You can always check with your Ministry of Foreign Affairs what the current status is of the situation in Kenya. Mombasa is a very relaxed and laid back city, where you can move about freely as a foreigner. Do, however, consider that you are in another culture and that the majority of the people are poor. Do not over-expose your photo camera, video camera or mobile phone. We also strongly discourage walking alone in the streets at night. We recommend that you take a taxi.

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Yes. When arriving in Kenya you can buy a visa. This costs 40 euro and has to be paid for in cash.

Do I need vaccinations for Kenya?

Yes. Your GP or Travel Clinic will know which vaccinations are required. You are advised to vaccinate against DTP, Yellow Fever and Typhoid Fever. For those who want to do voluntary work at our projects taking malaria prevention is also obligatory.

Can I withdraw money from a cash dispenser in Kenya?

Yes. Using a bank card with a Maestro/ Cirrus logo you can withdraw money from various banks in Kenya. The most known is Barclays Bank. It is located in Mombasa city. You will of course have to pay a transaction fee.

Can I use a cell phone in Kenya?

Yes. If you have a sim-lock free phone we recommend that you buy a Kenyan phone number for 1 euro. This is much cheaper than using your own (foreign!) provider. You can always upgrade your phone with at least 1 euro. A bargain!!!

Is there a minimum period for which I have to do voluntary work?

No. We don’t demand a minimum stay for voluntary work at our projects. We do recommend however a minimum stay of at least 3 weeks. This is the time you will need to get to know the work, the projects and the children and to be able to fully enjoy your stay as a volunteer. If a certain period has more than one applicant our preference will go to volunteers who are willing to stay longer. We will inform you accordingly after having received your application.

How can I apply as a volunteer?

Please send your application for volunteer work by e-mail tojrmunyasya@africaonline.co.ke
